History
Georgia’s industrial legacy

1890 - 1902
Rivet House stands as a testament to Athens, Georgia’s industrial legacy and creative resurgence. Originally built between 1890 and 1902, the Southern Manufacturing Company mill was a vital force in the town’s textile economy for much of the 20th century, producing denim and clothing in its timber-framed, thick masonry-walled facility.

1990
As with many Southern mills, the rise of global manufacturing led to its decline in the 1990s, leaving behind collapsing roofs, shattered windows, and a fading legacy.

2015
The turning point came in 2015, when a local developer began reviving the site, starting with Creature Comforts Brewing Company’s transformation of a ruined section into a modern brewery. This sparked further restoration, including the old Ace Sewing Plant, now a premier office space. The area soon flourished with acclaimed restaurants and businesses, while a nearby railroad still hints at its industrial past.

2020
At the heart of this renewal was one last untouched building, an aging three-story structure at the southeast corner of the property. By 2020, plans were in motion to turn it into something Athens lacked: a destination boutique hotel that honored the city’s past and creative spirit. Meticulously reconstructed using original heart pine and historic masonry, the building was transformed into the Rivet House, home to Osteria Olio and The Spa at the Rivet House.

2024
The team created a space where locals and travelers alike could connect through food, relaxation, and design. Featuring bold interiors, preserved architectural elements, and thoughtful amenities, the hotel reflects Athens’ character in every detail, from the exposed freight elevator doors to the sturdy original columns of ancient pine. Since opening in July 2024, the Rivet House has become a celebrated hub of hospitality, culture, and community in Athens.
